I wasn't sure about labeling this topic's title, I thought that "Education In Turkey" would be better at first, but I still don't know the whole education system in Turkey since I'm still a highschool student. So, let me talk about this issue in this text.
I'm a 10th grade student in Turkey. However, I should have be 11th grade now in normal situations. My situation is not normal because my school's type is "Social Sciences Highschool", so we have English preparation in the first year of our school. I wanted to study for 5 years in Social Sciences Highschool instead of studying at other highschool types such as Science Highschools, Religious Highschools, Anatolian Highschools, Technical Highschools or something.
Because in social sciences highschools, they give importance to language learning and other humanities branches such as history, geography, literature or whatever else.
AT LEAST THEY SAID SO.
When I learned the truths, it was such a pain to me. It wasn't just about the teaching style, it was also about the students.
I thought that they won't teach me maths in that highschool, at least not in the other years except the first one. However everyone in my class ,except five people, have been willing to attend law or psychology at the university. And since both of these programmes require maths in the university exam, they have to do it. I'm still in the same class since the first year of my highschool. I've already got used to it, but it still disappoints me that students in my school doesn't care about geography or literature. Most of the students say that they don't like literature. I mean you are here to have literature lessons because you are a TM (Turkish and Maths) student, literature is your branch. We have 8 lesson hours of literature in a week (We have 40 lesson hours at total in a week.).
There are 4 main types of students who want to attend university by the exam itself...
MF = Matematik-Fen = Maths-Science (Sciences: biology, chemistry, physics)
TM = Türkçe-Matematik = Turkish-Maths (Those students have to study everything except science lessons.)
TS = Türkçe-Sosyal Bilimler = Turkish-Social Sciences (such as history, geography, religion/philosophy)
DİL = Dil = Language (English)
I know that no where in this world is utopia, but at least people who made this normal place a hell, so they can also make the heaven if they want, no? You may think that I'm too naive, but they have to do something about this.
And unfortunately, I'm a language student but I cannot choose the language class even though they said us that they teach us for social sciences because in social sciences highschool, you cannot choose any of other class types except TM.
So, that's what we live in Turkey social sciences highschools...
